Composer & Arranger in Residence: Leigh Baker

Leigh Baker.

Leigh Baker has been the band's Composer and Arranger in Residence since early 2007 and his works feature heavily in the band's concert programmes, CDs and broadcasts.

A playing member of the band since 1990, Leigh has held the solo baritone position for the past 8 years, following time on 2nd euphonium and a brief spell on solo euphonium. Originally from Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire he settled in the West Yorkshire area after studying music at Huddersfield Polytechnic. In addition to his playing and arranging activities, Leigh is head of music at Honley High School in Huddersfield.

Leigh was awarded the 'Best new arrangement or composition' prize at the Brass In Concert Championships, 2006 for his arrangement of 'Bare Necessities', and picked up the same award in 2007 for his reworking of 'Mr Sandman'. His original work, 'Roman Triptych' was selected as the test piece for the 4th Section finals of the National Brass Band Championships in 2007.
